Adjectives for People

There are a lot of ways to describe people in the German language. One of the first verbs you learn to use as a German learner is the verb "sein". With this single verb, you can describe people in a variety of ways simply by adding an adjective to the end of the sentence. A: Wer ist Herr Antrim?

B: Er ist Deutschlehrer.

A: Ist er alt?

B: Er ist nicht sehr jung, aber er ist auch nicht alt. Ich glaube, er ist ungefähr dreißig Jahre alt.

A: Ist er schön?

B: Nein. Ich finde ihn hässlich. Hier ist ein Foto von ihm. (shows YouTube icon)

A: Uh. Er ist doch hübsch. Er ist nicht zu dick und nicht zu dünn. Er ist einfach richtig schlank und sportlich. Er sieht auch klug aus.

B: Nein. Er muss dumm sein. Warum sonst sollte er Lehrer sein? Wenn er klug wäre, wäre er Arzt oder Wissenschaftler. Vielleicht wäre er hübscher, wenn er sonnengebräunt wäre, aber er ist für mich zu blass.

B: Ja, aber er ist 1,80 groß und bekannt.

A: Und er ist arm. Es ist mir egal, ob er groß oder klein ist, bekannt oder unbekannt, blond oder braunhaarig. Es ist nur wichtig, ob er Geld hat. Wenn er reich wäre, könnte er die anderen Probleme lösen.

B: Ja, aber dann hätte er andere Probleme.

A: Zum Beispiel?

B: Ich glaube, er ist fleißig, geduldig und lustig. Wenn er reich wäre, wäre er faul, ungeduldig und ernst. Geld macht schwach. Probleme machen stark. Wenn man niemals hungrig war, wird man es nicht wertschätzen, wenn man endlich satt ist. Wenn man niemals krank war, versteht man nicht, warum es wichtig ist, gesund zu leben.

A: Jetzt bist du Philosoph?

B: Sei still. Dieses Gespräch macht mich müde.
