On our second day in Vienna, we started out with a tour of the Hundertwasserhaus, which is an apartment complex that was designed by an artist. It is a pretty weird building and it reminded me a lot of the City Museum in St. Louis. It looked like something that Dr. Seuss would come up with.
After the Hundertwasserhaus, we saw the Schönbrunn Palace, which was very pretty, but we weren't allowed to take any pictures inside. I personally think that this palace is more beautiful on the outside anyway, as the gardens are some of the best I have seen.
After the palace, we went out for lunch in front of the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum, which is essentially a war history museum that shows the types of wars that were waged and the kinds of weapons that were used. I personally loved the sign on the door that says, "Kriege gehören ins Museum." (Wars belong in museums.) I always tell my students "war" (the German past tense of "sein") is in the past like it should be. After lunch, of course, we went into the museum and took a look around.
While the students took a tour of the Belvedere Palace and did a scavenger hunt for certain artworks, the adults in the group went for a walk around the area. I didn't actually do much walking, as we had already walked quite a bit that day. I actually took a bit of a nap on a bench in front of the pond. When it was time to meet the students again, I found out that there was a second side to the palace, which had a really cool fountain and garden area. It also had a great view of the city. I wish I had gone over there before.
After the Belvedere Palace, we went to dinner at a local restaurant. When we returned to our hotel, the students decided that they wanted to spend a bit more time exploring the city so we went out for ice cream and took a walk. It was a great way to end our time in Vienna. The next morning we were going to take the bus to Salzburg and Munich.
