HelloTalk

One of my YouTube viewers suggested I take a look at this app called "HelloTalk". It is an online platform for language learners to find and chat with native speakers of the language they are trying to learn. You can download it on your Android or iOS device. You can see my full review in the video below or you can see some other insights I didn't mention in the video below the video.

Observation #1:

I find it odd where they put the search for new users. If I want to add a friend of mine from Germany so I can chat with them in this app, I would intuitively go to the search button at the top of the app, but this will only search the page I am on. If I am on conversations I have already started with other people, I can search for words or phrases used in our conversations or I can search for the username of my language partners, but I can't add anyone new this way. If I go to the part where I add new people and I click on the search button, it only allows me to narrow the random results that appear for people who match the language criteria I put in. Finally, after a bit of playing around, I found that you have to go to the "Partners" tab and then click the "Add" button in the top right that looks like a person with a plus sign next to them. I get why they did it this way, but it just wasn't intuitive to me. That, however, could be that I am an idiot.

I thought you should be able to search for new people on this page.

Unfortunately, all I can do here is narrow my search options, but not search for specific people.

Here I can search for keywords and other info from my conversations, but not add new people.

Here you can see what I see if I search for a term in the conversations. It simply shows the conversations that use that term.

Apparently, this is where you can add other users. Click that button in the top right.

Here you can see that I searched for "Fred" and only one person showed up, because only one person has the username "Fred". I assume there are other "Fred's", but they have numbers and stuff in their username.

Observation 2:

If you look at the first picture in the slideshow above, you can see that the app tells you what time it is in the country of the people you are trying to add. This is a simple reminder that there is a 7 hour difference between where I live and Germany. This reminds you that it would be a bad idea to call your language partner at this time of day. If they are online, there is also an indicator for that on this screen.

Observation #3:

I didn't mention it in the video, but when you favorite a message, word, or phrase, you can find them by going to your profile. You can also find a simple translator (like Google Translate), a notepad, and a list of your current language exchanges.

Observation #4:

There is not an online version of this app. This can be a good thing or a bad thing. I personally think that they could greatly increase the number of users they have if they would make an online version, but having it as an iOS and Android app makes it pretty accessible. Also, this encourages people to contact their language partners on a regular basis, because it is attached to their phones like texting is.

These are just a few things that I thought of after I had already done the review. None of them are really good or bad or anything that really needed to be in the review, but I thought they bore mentioning in this blog about the app.
